Additional information:

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) requires a three-step approach as a condition of license for the commercial seal hunt. This training session allows the industry to pursue professionalization, including education and instruction for new entrants.

The instructor, Gil Thériault, is the first new instructor certified under the new Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) Regional Policy of Recognition of Trainers Authorized to Offer Humane Seal Killing Training.

*DFO licensing policy requires a commercial sealer to work under an experienced sealer for two years to obtain a professional license. Sealers are also encouraged to take a training course on proper hunting techniques, product preparation, and handling. Those taking seals for personal use must have a hunter’s capability certificate or big game license and attend mandatory training sessions before a license can be issued.

What are the differences between personal use and commercial use licenses?
