Seal Pelts

Seal pelts, both as fur and leather, have been used for thousands of years to protect Canada’s northernmost residents from the harshest winter conditions. Seal fur is breathable, but blocks wind and retains heat. Seal leather is soft and strong, rugged and elegant, perfect for a multitude of uses.

Seal pelts are having a renaissance in the Canadian artisan and luxury sectors. Function truly meets fashion in modern seal textiles: the durability of the fur and leather is appropriate for the Canadian climate; each pelt’s natural patterns and colours are celebrated and showcased in boots, shoes, jackets, accessories, and home décor.

Choose your pelt according to use

Colour isn’t the only choice you’ll have when selecting the perfect pelt. The age of the seal and the seal specie is also important to consider. “Beater” pelts come from younger seals and are, not surprisingly, softer and more supple. They also have different patterning than adult seal pelts.

Adult seals have thicker, sturdier, larger pelts. These are more suitable for furniture covering and carpets due to their ruggedness. Older seals may have also engaged in seal fights during their lifetimes; many adult pelts have scratch marks from claws. These features do not detract from the overall pelt but add interest and a hint of “bad ass”—of course, you can select the perfect pelt for your requirements.

There are 2 species of seal that or more widely used in Canada:  Harp Seals and Ringed Seals.  The Ringed Seal is the type of seal skin which most people relate to Nunavut, Northwest Territories and Greenland. The Ringed seal is named for the black spots ringed with light marks on its back. The Harp Seal also known as Greenland seal or saddle seal, saddleback seal because they they have an irregular horseshoe-shaped band of black on the the back when they are adults. The young Harp Seal pelts have a light silvery colors with black marks and are the most available on the market because of their abundant population.

Adult Seal Pelt

Steel-blue when wet and steel grey when dry, the adult Harp Seal pelt is characterized by an irregular horseshoe-shaped band of black on the the back.

Young Seal Pelt

With a light silvery color and black marks, the young Harp Seal pelts are smaller than the adult pelts measuring between 36”- 48” L x 24”- 36” W.

Ringed Seal

The Ring Seal’s clear and notable ring markings along the ridge has been seen in the Inuit’s clothing for hundreds of years.  The Ring Seal’s natural color is light grey with very notable markings along the ridge which can vary from light grey to almost black.

Harp Seal

Primarily in natural silver color with a characteristic black pattern, young Harp seal pelts have soft, short and shiny guard hair and are the most available on the market.

A Sustainable Choice

It is always ideal, environmentally and ethically, to use all parts of an animal that is harvested. Today’s seal harvest attempts to make full use of the animal by harvesting the seal meat, oil, and pelts. The Canadian seal harvest is well-managed and carried out following strict government regulations.

Seal pelts are processed by tanning. This preserves the fur or leather, leaving it durable, flexible, and resistant to deteriorating. Done properly, seal fur and leather will last for decades; durable products that will stand the test of time.

A note for buyers: Throughout Canada, the seal fur trade is legal. The US, Mexico, Taiwan, and the EU have restrictions in place; if you are from these areas, check before attempting to import seal products.
