Omega-3 supplements for Pets

Pets are part of the family and they deserve the very best. Supplementing your dog or cat’s diet with omega-3 supplements like seal oil can help our best friends live longer, better, and with more energy (and less shedding). As pet foods don’t provide enough omega-3, it is good to give supplements.

What are Omega-3 Fatty Acids?

Fat plays an important role in the nutrition of pets. However, not all fat is good. While some fats solely act as a source of energy, other fats are closely associated with the health of our canine companions.

All nutritional fats are composed of fatty acids. Omega-3s are fatty acids that include:

  • Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)
  • Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
  • Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)

While animals can produce some types of fatty acids out of other nutrients, certain types of fatty acids must be directly supplied via the food eaten. ALA and/or EPA and DHA are essential fatty acids for your pets.

When it comes to health benefits for pets, research has shown that EPA and DHA are very powerful. That’s why it is recommended to enrich the diet of your pet with omega-3 fatty acids high in EPA and DHA.

Best Omega-3 supplements for pets

The most effective omega-3 fatty acids for the health of your pets are the ones with high levels of EPA and DHA.

More importantly, the omega-3 supplements for your pets should also be free of toxins and pollutants. Ideally, they should also be sustainably harvested. That’s why seal oil is a good alternative.

Omega-3 levels in Seal Oil

All seal oil products currently available on the market are natural which means that they are not made of concentrated seal oil.

Dogs and cats are mammals too; that’s why seal oil is so much better absorbed by them than fish oil is. As well, seal oil contains three important Omega-3s (DPA, EPA, DHA) while fish oil only contains two (EPA and DHA). DPA has health benefits all its own, and it also improves the body’s ability to absorb and utilize EPA and DHA.

How much omega-3 per day for pets?

Not all pets should take the same amount of seal oil. Your pet’s age, their body weight and level of activity should determine how much omega-3 they need. For the small dogs or cats, ¼ teaspoon a day of liquid seal oil will suffice.

For small dogs (6 – 12 kg) should take around ½ to 1 teaspoon.  Medium size dogs (12 – 24 kg) should take around 1 to 1½ teaspoon and big dogs (over 24 kg) should take approximately 2 teaspoons per day.

Shelf Life

Liquid seal oil should be refrigerated once opened. Omega-3 seal oil is relatively more stable and less prone to lipid peroxidation than fish oils. This ensures better performance and a much longer shelf life. Seal Oil liquid bottles usually have a 2-year shelf life.

And It Tastes Good Too!

Almost without exception, dogs and cats love seal oil. Adding this omega-3 supplement to their diet is not a chore—in fact, they’ll likely lap it up as a treat. For those picky eaters, it might even enhance their appetite! Just add a little on top of their food once or twice a day.

With omega-3 supplements like seal oil, you can be confident that you’re doing the best by your pet. Canadian seal oil products are harvested sustainably from wild, free-living animals, and are free from additives, pesticides, hormones, or other unnatural substances.

All seal oil products available on Canadian Seal Products online store are tested to ensure purity and freedom from environmental toxins.

No adverse effects of seal oil supplements are known at recommended dosages. Of course, monitor your pet after starting any new food or product, and follow the dosage recommendations on the label.
