The harp seal hunt will begin this Thursday in the Magdalen Islands sector, with favorable ice conditions and significant catch potential.
According to aerial observations from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), the heart of the herd, commonly referred to as the haul, is 30 nautical miles (55.5 km) east of Pointe de l’ East of the archipelago.
Researcher Mike Hammill of the Maurice Lamontagne Institute, who is conducting the five-year population census this year, is surprised to see so many of them. “There are densities that we haven’t seen for a long time,” he said. Where we see good groups, it’s really impressive!”
