Last week, around 400 grey seals were captured under scientific observation on Brion Island. The Quebec Ministry of the Environment and the Fight Against Climate Change (MELCC) has permitted the third consecutive hunting season on the beach of the ecological reserve in order to document the impact of hunting activities and the ever-growing herd on its environment.
Minister Benoît Charrette must finally decide whether to remove a piece of the beach from protected territory in order to enable an annual hunt there and maintain the natural balance of the area while promoting the local economic advantages of its rich pinniped population.
