Consultant Bob Hardy makes a presentation to Rotary on the impact of seals on the fishery.
Bob Hardy give a presentation on harp seals and their impact on the fishery. The harp seal population has exploded and the result is a threat to our fishing reserves.
He mentioned fisheries are very important in Canada, Iceland, and Norway. In Canada, we have more than 10 million seals population and in Norway, there are less than 2 million seals but those harp seal herds in Norway rarely come close to the coastline. The seal population in Canada is a significant thereat for Canadian commercial fisheries.
Bob Hardy says that seals are under-represented as a cause of cod and capelin decline.
