Bob Hardy

Seal Meat Subcommittee

Owner of Hardy Fish Co. Limited, Member of the Atlantic Seal Task Team

Robert Hardy was born in Carbonear, Newfoundland and Labrador, spent his formative years at Battle Harbour, Labrador and participated in the inshore commercial salmon and cod fisheries. A graduate of the Marine Institute’s Food Technology program and employed with Memorial University for nine years as a researcher before taking a management position in the seafood industry. While employed with industry, he coordinated the production of the first seal oil capsule marketed in Newfoundland and Labrador (Canada), a product that remains successful today. He started his fishery consulting company in 2007 and for the past 15 years has worked with industry on numerous product and market development initiatives, process innovation and new technology projects. Many of these projects include research on seal oil, meat and by-product utilization.  An indigenous member of the NunatuKavut, strong advocate for renewable wild fisheries, the seal fishery and vocal member of the Atlantic Seal Science Task Team (2020). He has experienced the ups and downs of Atlantic Canada’s fishery and believes that we are at a critical point in terms of historic seal populations, resource biomass and necessary management decisions.
