Seal Meat Nutrition Facts

High in protein and low in cholesterol, seal meat is an all-round excellent dietary choice. It supports intensive training, high-protein diets, and is an ideal alternative to red meat for those trying to lower their risk of cardiovascular disease and other health concerns.

Seal meat nutrition

Let’s look at the numbers. First, protein. Harp seal loin has 23 grams of protein per 100 gram serving; flipper meat has just slightly less at 21 grams per serving. That’s a lot more than chicken (14.6 grams) or fish (17.8 grams).


And while beef and pork have close to the same amount of protein as seal, seal is far lower in fat—less than 2% fat, in fact, while beef, for example, averages 23%.  Seal meat also has many times the amount of iron and calcium of those other protein sources, and significantly more magnesium and vitamin B12.


High in iron and other minerals

Iron deficiency is a common concern for many in Canada and around the world. In Canada, more than 10% of women of reproductive age do not consume enough iron. Low iron levels lead to anemia, which is linked to low energy levels, impaired cognitive function, compromised immunity, and slowed metabolism.


One 100 gram serving of seal loin contains 35.5 mg of iron, or 250% of Health Canada’s recommended daily intake. The same amount of beef, pork, poultry, or fish contains less than 2 mg iron.


Seal meat is also relatively high in:

  • Calcium: 591 mg per serving (compared to 78 mg in poultry, 3.5 in beef)
  • Magnesium: 34 mg per serving (pork has 27 mg; beef, poultry, and chicken are all less)

But is seal meat safe?

The short answer is: yes. Seal meat is very safe. Hunters involved in the seal harvest are trained and certified by provincial authorities to inspect, process, and store seal in accordance with high standards, equivalent to those in place for domestic livestock. As well, seals are watched from a distance before being harvested, to make sure that they behave normally.


You can eat seal meat with confidence, knowing it is a natural, wild meat, raised without hormones, antibiotics, or processed food. Seals are harvested from their natural habitat, the pristine icy north Atlantic, ensuring the meat is delicious and nutritious.


As well, seal meat processing facilities must be certified by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and meet or exceed all Health Canada guidelines.
