Carino: A Proud Leader in a Sustainable Canadian Seal Sector

10 November 2020
Seal Fur

Located in the town of South Dildo, Newfoundland, Carino Processing Ltd. (Carino) handles and produces marine fur skin, leather, oil and meat, which derives naturally from harp, grey, hooded and ring seals.

Viable hunting for abundant seal populations has long been a vital activity for settlers in Canada’s coastal regions.  Today, professional seal hunters obtain license to hunt on an annual basis by authority of Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans under the Fisheries Act.  There are strict management measures and regulations in place to ensure the best quality, animal welfare performance and sustainability.

Carino is proud of its generational history in the seal products trade.  Its flagship facility in Dildo has been a hub for the annual hunt for over 50 years.  In this time, it has evolved from a ‘wet’ pelt storage and oil rendering station to a modern operation producing garment-ready and food grade products.  Today the South Dildo location serves as an intake point for the majority of landings made by professional seal hunters throughout Eastern Canada.

International distribution has been a structural component of Carino’s business since a time when most seal products business was conducted through Norway.  Today, Carino’s production operations are wholly based in Canada, though markets remain international. While Carino attempts to service all customer requests, its core business is wholesale.

Its production processes are tailored to allow for the best natural benefits to be derived from seal.  Carino’s core values include the full utilization of the seals that are harvested.  This is evident in the line of seal products that are available for purchase.

Due to the durability of the seal fur and leather, Carino can guarantee a lifetime of distinctly unique premium products that cannot be imitated.

Seal Oil

Seal oil is rich in essential fatty acids such as Omega-3. Licensed and certified by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), Carino produces food grade seal oil using best practices for handling and processing to maximize obtainable health benefits of the nutrient-rich oils contained within the seal fat.

There are 4 types of Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs); DHA, EPA, DPA and ALA (plant based), none of which are naturally synthesized by the human body and must therefore be obtained from outside sources. Seal oil consists of DHA, EPA and DPA, which are instrumental in the prevention of heart disease, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease, as well as depression and cancers and a number of skin diseases.

Seal oil is unique from other sources of omega-3 in that it contains DPA (naturally occurring in mother’s breast milk) which is proven to have powerful health benefits. DPA is also shown to increase the positive effect that EPA and DHA have on the body! In addition to this, seal oil is more readily and effectively absorbed and utilized by the human body than other non-mammalian sources of omega-3.

Licensed and certified by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), Carino produces food grade seal oil using best practices for handling and obtaining the nutrient-heavy oil from the seal fat.

Seal Meat

Seal meat is a nutrient-rich superfood that is very high in protein and very low in fat. Seal meat is a good source of magnesium, zinc, phosphorus and copper.

Carino has produced a variety of high quality frozen seal meat cuts including loins, flippers, racks or whole carcasses.

Carino is proud to be a leader in such a sustainable, eco-friendly and truly Canadian sector!
